Throwing and Hand Building a Pottery Comical Fish

me with clay fish

I like throwing on the pottery wheel but I love hand building as well. Making this fish was a process of combining Throwing the body of the fish on the wheel and then building the attached parts by hand. The body and the tail were first. I threw a cylinder to make the tail and the body then hand build the other parts and attached them.

Frank Polito an instructor at Pottery West taught me a painting style to use on fish plates. I took that and used it on my fish sculpture. I can’t wait to fire and glaze him.

Pottery a Community Feel

IMG_5342

Spending time with my mom at pottery is a great stress release. Pottery fulfills a creative need for me; I get  to make beautiful works of art. When I work with the clay it takes focus and all my outside stress just melt away for at least as long as I am there. The pottery has a community feel. We get to chat together and create together. The pottery is a place where everyone is  in a relaxed non judgmental environment. One of the girls that is in our pottery community started taking pottery following a divorce that had emotionally tore her up. She said it was the best therapy she could have. I find it is that as well. Everyone should find an outlet that speaks peace and calm to your soul and makes you feel good about you. You can see more about this fabulous pottery at http://potterywest.com/a/

One of my favorite hobbies is making pottery. My specialty are mushrooms with little mice or trolls. I also like to make little jewelry boxes. Working with clay is relaxing and satisfies my need to create something.
